Swelling first needs its cause understood. Lymphatic drainage may be part of selected care plans, but it does not treat every swelling or melt fat.
Identify the cause first
The cause of swelling depends on its onset, location and health context. A heavy-feeling limb alone does not establish lymphoedema. Note changes and discuss assessment; choosing massage without understanding the cause may be inappropriate.
Where does drainage fit?
For lymphoedema, manual drainage may form part of a plan including movement, skin care and appropriate compression. These principles do not mean every method suits everyone. Assessment and the care team determine options, precautions and follow-up.
It does not melt fat
Accumulated fluid and body fat are different. A change in heaviness or limb size does not prove fat loss. Avoid detox or rapid-slimming claims; ask about the actual session goal and what will be monitored.

Your role between visits
If a plan is proposed, ask for instructions suited to your abilities. Do not improvise compression or self-massage from a general video. Clarify skin care, suitable activity and what to do if symptoms change or a prescribed device causes difficulty.
Changes needing prompt assessment
A suddenly swollen, painful, red or hot limb, or swelling with fever, needs assessment before massage. Associated breathlessness or chest pain requires urgent care. After assessment, drainage may be discussed at PhysioFlex without promising permanent resolution of swelling.
Comparison needs context
Clothing fit or heaviness may change without accurately identifying the cause. Explain whether swelling affects one side, varies through the day or follows a procedure. Observations guide discussion rather than automatically selecting a technique.
Compression is not just pressure strength
If proposed within care, ask about suitability, use and what to do if pain or skin changes occur. Do not choose stronger pressure based on heaviness alone. Devices, compression garments and manual drainage differ and are not automatically interchangeable.
